I’ve been training and coaching people for over a decade, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: your body was designed for function, not just movement.
Running is great. Pilates is great. But neither will prepare you for the full demands of life like functional fitness does. That’s why, after 12 years of doing this, I’m still convinced CrossFit’s methodology is unmatched.
CrossFit Isn’t a Fad, It’s a Framework
When done right, CrossFit isn’t about hype. It’s about results. It’s measurable, observable, and repeatable, which means you can track your progress over time with real data.
CrossFit trains all ten general physical skills:
- Cardiovascular endurance
- Stamina
- Strength
- Flexibility
- Power
- Speed
- Coordination
- Agility
- Balance
- Accuracy
Every workout challenges more than one of these skills, and over time, you build capacity in them all. That’s what separates it from most fitness programs. You’re not just burning calories. You’re building a body that’s capable.
Why Running Isn’t Enough
I love running, but let’s be honest, running doesn’t build muscle. It improves cardiovascular endurance, sure, but it doesn’t improve strength, balance, or coordination. And as you age, those are the qualities that keep you independent, injury-free, and confident.
If all you do is run, you’re developing endurance in a very narrow lane. But if you lift, jump, squat, pull, push, and carry, you’re training for the real world, for your 60s, 70s, and 80s.
Why Pilates Won’t Carry You Forever
Pilates builds core strength and mobility, which are both great. But it doesn’t challenge your body under load or across multiple time domains. You might improve posture and flexibility, but you won’t gain the kind of functional strength that lets you carry your grandkids, load your own luggage, or move a heavy piece of furniture.
Pilates also misses the cardiovascular and power elements that are essential for longevity. The truth is, real health and performance require strain. You have to push your limits to grow them.
Fitness That Transfers to Life
CrossFit’s model is simple: constantly varied, functional movements, performed at high intensity.
That means it’s not random. It’s strategic. You’re training in ways that transfer to real life. Getting stronger in the gym means you’re stronger everywhere else.
Don’t let the word “intensity” scare you. Everyone is built different with different intenstiy outputs on a daily basis. We are not trying to crush your soul. We know when you need to scale back…heck we encourage one to two days per week with less intensity effort.
You become:
- Ready for a game (weekend softball or a 5k, anyone?)
- Ready for a mission (whether that’s chasing kids, serving others, or leading your family)
- Ready for life
That’s the kind of training that changes everything.
Built for the Long Game
The CrossFit methodology works because it trains the body to adapt to constant new demands. You develop strength and endurance together. You test short, medium, and long-duration efforts. You track your output. You measure progress.
It’s not about the perfect playlist or the prettiest gym. It’s about results. Science backs it. Consistency proves it.
If you want a program that builds confidence, capacity, and community, this is it.
