Semaglutide drugs have taken the world by storm over the last year. Drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy have recently received FDA approval and will only become more common in use over time. While I originally had negative opinions on these drugs, I’ve changed my outlook somewhat.
The downsides of being over fat far outweigh the side effects of these drugs, especially when combined with proper exercise (weight training) and adequate protein intake. So what exactly are they, and how do they work?
Semaglutides, are a class of medications known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, and are primarily prescribed for type 2 diabetes management. These drugs work by stimulating the release of insulin, reducing blood sugar levels, and promoting weight loss. However, their benefits extend beyond diabetes control.
Besides managing blood sugar, semaglutides have shown promising results in weight management. Studies have demonstrated that they can lead to significant weight loss, making them an invaluable tool for individuals struggling with obesity. These drugs help control appetite, increase satiety, and reduce cravings, helping individuals make healthier food choices.
While semaglutides offer notable advantages, incorporating exercise and nutrition into the treatment plan can optimize their effectiveness. Regular physical activity has numerous benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, increased insulin sensitivity, and enhanced weight loss.
When combined with semaglutides, exercise can further amplify weight loss and improve metabolic control. Engaging in aerobic activities like walking, jogging, or cycling can help burn calories, boost metabolism, and improve overall fitness. Strength training exercises, such as weightlifting or resistance training, can promote muscle growth, increase metabolism, and enhance insulin sensitivity.
Additionally, adopting a well-balanced, nutrient-rich diet can complement the effects of semaglutides. Focus on consuming whole foods like fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins to provide essential nutrients and promote overall health. Avoid processed foods high in sugars, unhealthy fats, and empty calories, as they can hinder weight loss and impact blood sugar control.
Proper nutrition can also help manage side effects associated with semaglutides. Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite. Eating smaller, frequent meals that are low in fat and easy to digest can help alleviate these symptoms.
Remember, while semaglutides and healthy lifestyle choices can have a positive impact, it’s essential to follow medical advice and work closely with healthcare professionals. Regularly monitoring of blood sugar levels and adjustments to medication dosage may be necessary.
At WOTOWN FIT, we acknowledge the existence of possible drawbacks associated with these drugs. However, we believe in addressing these concerns by promoting education on the importance of weight training and proper nutrition when using them for healthy weight loss.
Please note that this is no way shape or form a suggestion that individuals should use these drugs. I do however believe it would be irresponsible to pretend these drugs don’t exist. It’s very important to educate the general population on everything out there so they can make their own informed decisions. It’s our responsibility as fitness coaches to educate ourselves on the happenings in the world of health and fitness so that we can be a guiding light to those seeking our help.
